Among the services the county offers include: housing, senior and social services, open space, public art, animal care, behavioral health, economic development and more. The county has an annual operating budget and capital investments of more than $500 million and employs approximately 2,500 people, including 10 elected officials: assessor, clerk, probate judge, sheriff, treasurer and five county commissioners.

Named after the town of Bernalillo, which was its original county seat and a former Spanish military outpost, Bernalillo County encompasses 1,167 square miles bisected by the Rio Grande. It was one of nine original counties when the New Mexico Territory was created in 1850, and at one point its length extended all the way from Texas to the San Bernardino Valley in California. Albuquerque became the permanent county seat on May 15, 1883.

Company History

SYMBOLISM IN THE BERNALILLO COUNTY SEAL

THE ZIA SUN SYMBOL

New Mexico’s distinctive insignia is the Zia Sun Symbol, which originated with the Indians of Zia Pueblo in ancient times. Four is the sacred number of Zia, and the figure is composed of a circle from which four points radiate. To the people of Zia Pueblo, the sacred number is embodied in the earth, with its four seasons; in the day, with sunrise, noon, evening and night; in life, with its four divisions—childhood, youth, manhood and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love without beginning, without end.

THE TWO MOUNTAIN RANGES

The two mountain ranges symbolize the Sandia and Manzano ranges in the eastern quadrant of Bernalillo County. The eight sheep grazing in the valley represent the eight Spanish land grants which comprise Bernalillo County : Pajarito, Alameda, San Pedro, Elena Gallegos, Los Padillas, Antonio Sedillo, Atrisco and Chilili Grants. These sheep also symbolize the primary occupation of the first settlers of New Mexico, sheep herding.
